How is Christmas Celebrated Around the World?

Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus. This feast was created by the pope to promote Christianity and remove pagan festivals celebrated at the winter solstice.

During the IVth century, the pope decided to bring the Christmas day on December 25th.

Christmas has always been represented by religious ceremonies and gifts and

greetings exchange.

Here are some Christmas symbols:

* The Advent consists of a burning candle each Sunday four weeks before Christmas;

which symbolize the rebirth of light after the winter solstice.

* The December 24th Christmas Mass; which celebrates the birth of Jesus.

* The Christmas Crib; which symbolizes the birth of Jesus in Christian homes.

* The Christmas tree, a symbol from the pagan celebration and representing life.

* The Yule log; which represents the log that we put in the fireplace to warm up on Christmas Eve.

* Santa Claus, an American creation, inspired by the Christian Saint Nicholas (celebrated in Belgium, Netherlands, Germany and Alsace. This character wears a luxurious red cape, he has a long white beard and wears a red miter, he also holds a golden crosier. Saint Nicholas rewards good children while his companion Pere Fouettard/Black Pete punishes nasty children) and the elf Yule Goat, celebrated in Scandinavian countries.

Over the centuries, Christmas has evolved and Christmas Eve with our family, replaced the religious ceremonies.

The gift exchange: luxurious for the rich people and useful - sometimes only one orange - for the poor people, has been replaced by the modern marketing. People not only buys gifts but also spend lots of money in decoration items, food, drink…

The secularization of our society removed the true meaning of Christmas Time; which is, obviously, becoming a pagan feast.

Here are some countries which celebrate Christmas:

Belgium: Belgians have a festival especially dedicated to children; which is Saint Nicholas (Sinter Klaas) on December 6th. The Great Patron of Schoolboys, who is supposed to bring candies in their shoes, brings in fact toys by the thousands to our children.

In Belgium, Christmas is rather reserved for adults: the streets are decorated and illuminated, we decorate our houses, windows, gardens, Christmas trees. Belgium seems to forget that it is a Catholic country and closes more and more churches, therefore, the Midnight Mass on December 24th usually happens at 6 or 8 PM. We then eat with our family and at 12 PM we exchange our gifts. Children usually receive a book or some clothes.

Christmas Day has little meaning but practicing Catholic go to church. Belgian people visit their family on January 1st. In the Belgian Ardens, people celebrate December 31st and not Christmas.

France: Christmas is dedicated to children. The streets and the houses are decorated several weeks in advance. French people have lots of Christmas customs: Christmas Markets, the Christmas tree, the Christmas Dinner, Père Noël, Christmas gifts, stories, songs, Christmas turkey, The Christmas Crib, the Yule Log, and so on. In Alsace, however, Saint Nicholas predominates on Santa Claus.

The Netherlands: They organize their St. Nicholas (Sinter Klaas) festival: the old bearded man traveling by boat and accompanied by many black aids, who distributes gifts to good children. Dutch people reserve the big gifts for Christmas Time because they profit for some great bargains after Sinter Klaas.

Germany: Christmas in Germany lasts two days. On December 26th they visit their family and their friends. Christ-Kind offers gifts to the children on December 24th families and friends. Germany has also a Saint Nicholas festival on December 6th.

Great Britain: Christmas is celebrated in England with enthusiasm. Children sing “Christmas Carols” in the streets, they eat the famous “Christmas Pudding” at the end the Christmas Dinner. In England, Santa Claus fills the English children socks with gifts. British people also exchange greeting cards; which are a British creation.

Spain: If Santa Claus has little importance in Spain (Magi distribute gifts to children on January 6th), Spanish people decorate the streets with lights during the month of December. The windows of the shops are filled with lots of gifts and Spanish celebrate the Christmas Evening with their family.

Portugal: Christmas Eve is a holiday. The Portuguese attend the Christmas Midnight Mass; which is the “Missa Do Galo.” If there is no Christmas tree in Portugal, there is nevertheless a “Wooden Christmas”.

Italy: Christmas lasts three days, from December 24th till 26th. However, Christmas traditions vary from one region to another one and, depending on the region it is Babo Natale (Father Christmas) or the “Gesu Bambino” (Little Jesus) who brings gifts on December 25th. The Italian Christmas dessert is “Panettone”.

Scandinavian Countries: During the Christmas Dinner, Scandinavian people reserve a place for the souls of the deceased members of their family. Once they finish to eat, they read the bible. The whole family is singing Christmas songs and dance around the Christmas tree.

Other European countries: In Romania, on December 24th, there is a Christmas candle burning until the morning of December 25th. In Russia, Christmas Day happens on January 7th, according to the Orthodox calendar. In Greece the Christmas period begins on Christmas Eve and ends at the Epiphany. Christmas is less important than Easter.

USA: The Saturday after Thanksgiving, Santa Claus is coming to announce the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. American people love to celebrate Christmas and set up a decorated Christmas in their home. Children hang empty stocks empty on the fireplace and on the Christmas morning they find them filled with candy and small toys.

Canada: Houses, shops and streets are decorated with lights. Canadian people decorate their house with a Christmas tree, a Christmas wrap, a Christmas Crib… After the “Midnight Mass” people have a Christmas Eve with their family. Turkey and the Christmas log are the essential ingredients of a Canadian Christmas Dinner.

They send greeting cards to their friends and family who live far away.

South America: Peruvian people have Christmas parties but also learn to live better on christmas time. Their Christmas season lasts a full week. Mexican people celebrate Christmas with Las Posadas (pilgrimages representing the path by the Mary and Joseph). They celebrate the last Posada on the Christmas morning and then start the Christmas dinner. I Guatemala, immigrants have imported their German customs and the Christmas tree is essential but the Christmas gifts are reserved to the children. Gift exchange for adults is on January 1st.

Australia: Christmas happens during the summertime, so Australian people celebrate Christmas at the beach. People eat cold turkey and pudding.

New Zealand: If there are few decorations, New Zealand people organize Christmas parades and people sing in the parks. They also organize their famous “Christmas barbecue”.

Japan: Christmas is merely commercial significance in Japan. This festival represents Saint Nicholas and it is an opportunity to offer gifts to small children.

China: If Christmas Day is not a holiday, Christmas is celebrated in Chinese cities. This festival was imported into this country by foreign missionaries. For the Chinese people who celebrate it, Christmas is a religious event.

The Trunko - A Creature of Cryptozoology

Margate Beach in South Africa is popular these days as a prime spot for watching and observing whales. However, on November 1, 1922, the beach became a spot for a peculiar battle of three gigantic beasts of the sea.

The battle of two whales and a very weird beast captured the attention of beach goers and locals of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. The said beast resembled a sea creature which appeared to be elephant like.

According to the witnesses, the epic battle lasted for as long as three hours. Though it seems that the weird monster overpowered the two whales, no victor emerged from the clash. The long battle resulted with the death of the three giants.

However, the amusement and bewilderment did not end with battle. Several hours after the battle was over, the carcass of the bizarre creature invaded the shores of Margate Beach.

According those who saw the weird corpse, the beast was unbelievable forty seven feet long, ten feet wide and five feet in height.

Surprisingly, the observers saw no apparent head of the creature but it inevitably had a long trunk that sprang from its torso. The trunk which seemed like that of an elephant’s was at least five feet in length with a fourteen inch diameter. Because of its trunk, British cryptozoologist Dr Karl Shuker named it as “Trunko”.

Aside from the weird trunk, the Trunko had a tail which was twice the length of its trunk. The tail seemed to look like that of a lobster’s. Despite the fact that it was assumed to be a sea creature, it didn’t have scales. Instead, it was covered with snow-white fur that was at least eight inches long.

Intriguingly, no scientists came to the beach to examine the carcass of the bizarre creature. For ten days, the local people and the beach goers feasted their eyes on the carcass but not one marine life explorer; zoologist or biologist paid any attention to it.

Sadly enough, the tide pulled the giant carcass back to the sea on the tenth day and it became a supposed-to-be significant discovery that was wasted. To add to the disappointment of the wasted chance, it took the London Daily Mail two years before they ran a story on the event. It seems that whatever occurred in KwaZulu-Natal remained a secret of that region.

According to theories of some crypto zoologist, the Trunko might have been a variety of an aquatic elephant. They proposed that such animals may have evolved and went back to their marine habitats for the purpose of survival and sustenance.

There is a website that describes the Trunko and numerous other creatures of Cryptozoology in detail, this website is called: Unknown Creatures and it may be found at this url: http://www.unknown-creatures.com

Why Do We Need Renewable Energy Solutions?

That may seem like a silly question. Surely everyone knows that we need to begin to develop renewable energy solutions sooner, rather than later. Our current energy policies are doing a number on the planet’s ecological systems. Increasing pollution in the air and the seas, environmental impacts like oil spills and global warming are all, at least in part, due to our planet-killing energy habits.

There are numerous theories on the eventual exhaustion of the world’s oil reserves and everyone from global leaders to the average American is fighting against nuclear power because they all group nuclear power together with the nuclear bomb devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It isn’t a pretty picture.

Even so, you may be unaware of many of the important reasons to embrace renewable energy solutions. Here are some statistics:

According to top geologists and other intelligent people throughout the world, we will run out of oil by the year 2056. If you don’t believe me, you can look it up on Google. The theories are usually under the term “peak oil”. The recent spike in oil prices prompted several online discussions on whether we were closing in on peak oil now vs. later.

While it likely won’t affect me personally, as I’ll be either very old, or maybe even dead, many people that are alive today will still be on this planet in 2056, including most of our children, and grandchildren. Then what? Do we just hope for the best, or do we find alternatives now? Do we leave it such a terrible legacy for our progeny?

Now, to be honest, according to David Hume, a Scottish philosopher, economist and historian, we’ll never run out. But I place little trust in a man who’s been dead for over 230 years. I mean after all, back then we didn’t have the consumption that we have now.

We didn’t even have cars, let alone trains and jet planes, and the world’s commerce wasn’t carried from one place to another on diesel-powered transport trucks. In fact, the world had barely entered the industrial phase. Because of that, I don’t think that David Hume’s philosophy is a good yardstick with which to judge the potential energy crisis.

If you really need proof that the world has an energy problem, consider the wars that have essentially been fought over this very problem. Much of the ado in the Middle East is not about nothing–it’s about one thing and one thing only…oil.

And the US in particular is very aware that its days are numbered as far as relying on other sources for oil. As a result, the country is in somewhat of a panic mode right now.

For these reasons and tons more, we need to focus on renewable sources of energy. Otherwise, we’re going to be reverting back to the days when we rubbed two sticks together to cook our barbeque ribs, and living and working within the small radius that our legs (or bicycles) can carry us.

Change begins with you. Learn more about how you can create renewable energy for use in your home. Save energy and the environment using solar energy and wind power. For more information, visit http://solarpoweredhome.blogspot.com

Fun in Breckenridge This Fall

Make no mistake about it; Breckenridge is a ski and snowboard town.

Winter reigns supreme here and it’s easy to see why once the snow fills the mountain and Breckenridge’s four peaks glisten in the almost-daily sunlight. Of course, summer is no joke either as the town fills with festivals and visitors who can’t get enough of the warm, sunny days. But, spring and fall also offer much-needed down time that finds the town a bit less crowded, but no less exciting. If you’re considering a trip to Breckenridge, fall just might be your season of choice. Here are just a few reasons why:

• Mountain Biking: Summit County combines more than 200 miles of off-road trails with 40 miles of paved roads. Fall is a great time for biking Breck as the trails are usually less crowded, the changing aspen leaves provide for stunning eye candy, and the temperature is near perfect for a day of outdoor activity. Breckenridge Ski Resort also offers a variety of trails for all levels of difficulty, some of which can be accessed by the Colorado Superchair lift on Peak 8. However, if you just want to ride around town, paths offer views of Lake Dillon, Ten Mile Creek, and many other must-see Summit County spots. What’s even better is that you can literally jump on your bike and find trails that are in short distances to many Breckenridge condos and vacation rentals.

• Fly Fishing: The Blue River, the Colorado, Williams Fork, and the South Platte each provide year-round fishing that’s easily accessible from Breckenridge. Local businesses offer tours not only to these four Gold Medal Rivers, but also to private waters closed to the public. They’ll supply you with rods, tackle, clothing, and plenty of instruction to get you on your way to a trophy-size brown trout (in addition to rainbows, cutthroats, and brooks).

• Hiking: Similar to mountain biking, fall makes for a great hiking season as the trails are normally less crowded. While the wildflowers are well past their prime, the gentian plant is in full bloom. These fall plants display an autumn palette of stunning colors that range in reds, oranges, and golds. You might check out Wheeler National Recreation Trail or Loveland Pass West for prime color spotting. Additionally, fall means aspen season in Colorodo. Keep your eyes out for aspen groves on just about any hike around Breckenridge.

• Shopping and Dining: Most Breckenridge vacation rentals are located close to Main Street shopping and dining. While Breckenridge is certainly a town for the adventure seeker, it’s also a paradise for shopping and dining. While Main Street boats a range of bars, restaurants, clothing stores, and art galleries, outlet shopping is also popular in nearby Silverthorne.

• Museums: Fall gives us more of a reason to dip inside without feeling guilty about missing out on summer’s sun or winter’s snow. And, it makes for a perfect season to explore more of Breckenridge’s historic side. The Barney Ford House Museum and the Carter Museum are two of the more popular museum stops in town, both within walking distance from Main Street and central Breckenridge accommodations.

• Lodging: The Breckenridge Ski Resort opens for the season in November. In the couple of months before the winter season officially begins, many Breckenridge condos and vacation rentals offer discounted, off-season rates. So, fall makes for a great time to pack the bags and set off on a weekend getaway without having to spend too much time crunching numbers and worrying about the checkbook.

Each season in Breckenridge makes for an adventure. With no shortage of things to do around town, Breckenridge is unlike other Colorado ski towns that seem to shut down and clear out in the off-season. So, what are you waiting for? Get to Breckenridge for an unforgettable adventure this fall!

Vacation Rentals - Undiscovered Travel Retreats

Vacation time may be several months away, and you may be starting to think about where and what might be the perfect vacation this year - the beach, golf resort, SCUBA diving, skiing, maybe just sight seeing? And you think about places you have been - and the problems you have had. You cannot forget the time you went on vacation and discovered that the rooms that were really too small, or the room service was bad. There was also the time that the people in the next unit were loud and obnoxious, and the primary reason you had taken a vacation was to find peace and quiet. If only you could have the comforts of your home magically transported to your fantasy destination, then you could have had the perfect vacation.

Well, your dream arrangement is (almost) possible - you just have to look at vacation rental of a home, condo or cabin instead of hotels, motels and resorts. If you’ve never tried a vacation rental, there is a whole world of opportunities out there, just waiting for you to discover them.

Lots of people have vacation homes or condos that they use only part of the year. Many of these people rent out their places when they know they aren’t going to be there to use it themselves. The process is a little different than pulling up in front of a Best Western or Holiday Inn, but the principle is the same - you get to use a room or set of rooms where you are able to reside, for the length of your vacation.

Normally hotel, motel or resort rooms are relatively small. So things can get a bit tight, particularly if the kids are along, or if are there or two, three or four couples who have a routine of vacationing together. By renting a vacation home or condo you will get more space, some privacy, and you may be able to get luxury features you haven’t been able to install yet under your own roof. Another thing - you can find vacation rental units of practically all kinds, practically anywhere in the country - or, for that matter, in the world.

There are literally thousands of places available that are private homes, condos, cabins, etc., available for vacation rental. And, the facilities available in these rentals range from rustic to lavish, comfortable and spacious.

There are thousands of companies around the world acting as agents for owners. Many of these agents have listings in every state of the United States, plus Mexico and the Caribbean. They are really just booking agents, but they have information on a huge number of properties in a large number of locations. They have listings in Central America, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the South Pacific. Unless you had your heart set on a vacation in Antarctica, it doesn’t seem like there can be much of anywhere that you will not be able to find vacation rentals.

Most agents found online and offline have vacation rental homes in US destinations, and many also have access to international listings. On the Internet, you will be able to find listings provided by agents - and vacation rentals by owner. At most websites that cater to the vacation rental industry, listings will contain a full inventory of what a particular property has to offer the vacationer and most of those listings contain several photographs, including interior and exterior photos.

Many vacation home rentals can be found near the center of major tourist areas, such as Disney World in Florida, or near beaches - perhaps even on the beachfront - in many coastal states. Other vacation rental homes are located out in the boondocks, such as in the wooded and mountainous regions of Arkansas, Colorado or Tennessee.

For instance, there is the 4-bedroom, 2.5-bath, lakeside, log home at Presque Isle, Wisconsin, located on the shores of Presque Isle Lake, an hours’ drive south of Lake Superior. The property is a rustic wilderness stone and log cabin on top of a ridge, with sleeping space for up to 14 people. Overlooking the 1500-acre, crystal clear waters of Presque Isle Lake in the North Woods, this log cabin receives guest’s year-around. During the summer, many families enjoy the swimming off of the cabin’s lakeside dock, and anglers enjoy an ample supply of trophy Muskie, Walleye and Bass from the dock and by boat.

Let’s say you are thinking about taking the family to Breckenridge, Colorado for a week of skiing or snowboarding fun. A short search on the Internet will give you a sizable list of resorts or hotels to choose from. They have nice rooms, food service, probably a pool, and transit service to the slopes. But what is available in a vacation rental?

There are more than two-dozen vacation homes available in Breckenridge, Colorado. You can access descriptions and photographs of many of these homes. Facilities range from units that sleep 6 to exclusive townhouses that provide sleeping quarters for up to 22 people. Rates start at $70 per day to $20,000 per week. That would seem palatial to me. I wonder if the rates are negotiable?

Finding exactly the right-sized home, with the desired amenities, for the price you are willing to pay will take some searching. You should really take the time to decide what kind of a place you really want, the amenities, and how many people will be going with you, before you start going though lists. Of course, some people go to Breckenridge in the summer, rather than during the winter for the ski season, and rentals are available, even during the off-season.

With a vacation rental you get more space and special amenities compared with a conventional hotel, motel or resort. The cost per square foot is usually less, but the amount of space is usually more. You have more privacy, but you will probably have to do your own cooking and wash your own dishes. As with everything else, you have to decide how you want to spend you time and your money - what do you value and how much is it worth to you?

Picking and booking the right vacation home may require some time, but it is also time well spent with people you love. Compared to the hotel experience, a vacation home rental is an excellent option that you should consider for your next vacation. It might create that perfect memory you have been looking to achieve for your family.

Suppose, instead of Breckenridge and skiing, you are interested in a week at the beach, a weekend in the woods, or a week following your favorite NASCAR event. On January 20th, 2008, it is estimated that four million people will be in Washington D.C. for the inauguration of President-Elect Barack Obama. Hotels were sold out weeks ago… but there are still plenty of vacation rentals in the greater D.C. metropolitan area, looking for renters. Some people are even renting their homes to visitors coming in for the inauguration and taking the opportunity to visit grandma, while someone else is renting their home.

The acquisition of nobility titles formed an important aspect of the feudalistic era when monarchical institutions were the ruling powers. In return for ruling the land for the kingdom, the ruling elite or sitting monarch bestowed a title of nobility for a person who showed exemplary loyalty to him or one who has achieved remarkable feats for the kingdoms during wars and these noble titles came with them special powers on governing and protecting territorial areas as well as administering resources, commanding labor, food and money over common citizens or those of lower noble titles.

This was common in the ancient Roman society and to begin with, it is not acquired simply by birth. It is only possible as an inheritance if one’s ascendants were primarily conferred such nobility titles but this is also according to the rules on acquiring the title of nobility by inheritance. This means that nobility titles do not necessarily come with wealth and influence. More often than not, as mentioned, they are results of chivalric acts and unquestionable loyalty to the ruling monarch.

The more popular nobility titles were the prince, the marquis, and the knight. The prince as a title of nobility was acquired by being a member of the royal family either through consanguinity or affinity. They are sons, sons-in-law, or brothers or any other closely related male family member to the highest sitting monarch. They are potential rulers because of their potentials for fairness and their special abilities to guide and administer major affairs on behalf of the king or the queen. The highest in this rank is usually the next in the line of succession- that one who will take over the royal throne after the sitting monarch’s title is relinquished because of death. The next among the noble titles is the marquis. This is a title that can be easily inherited without any major impediment. The marquis acquires his rank by virtue of special services rendered for the king. They are in charged of protecting borders or marks also known as frontier districts. They rank higher over counts or earls in the tradition of the English peerage. Knighthood on the other hand is a title of nobility that is largely due to chivalrous acts and loyalty to the king. As soldiers, they are bestowed this rank and title due to their exemplary service for the kingdom during wars. The title thus entails the image of being a protector especially of women and the weak.

In modern times these titles of have become largely ceremonial and devoid of any political or administrative powers. This is because of the French revolution that toppled this practice and also because of the advent of democracy where powers are distributed and now comes from the people guided by a constitution that defines power and responsibilities. Although this is the case, nobles and royal distinction still exist in some countries most especially the British cultural tradition and those in some other Western European royalty. This is also the case in some other countries like the imperial family in Japan, and the monarchs in Thailand and Malaysia. There are some nations though like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the sheikdoms in other Arab nations and the sultanate in Brunei that still has the powerful institution of the monarchs who exercise absolute political and administrative functions and powers.

With the growing demand, perfume manufacturers have become more innovative and as a result, there are so many brands of perfumes available in different fragrances. The smell and quality of ingredients used in a perfume usually determines its price. Of course leading brands do have their own influence while deciding the cost of their perfume product.

With Perfumes that are available in a wide range and varieties, choosing a perfect perfume is a difficult task. if your perfume selection is correct, it will surely make you smell fresh and even people will be attracted to you, but on the other hand if your selection goes wrong, it can makes your admirers flee away too! Hence, it’s very important to choose a perfume whose fragrance complements your skin type and natural aroma of your body.

The scent of your perfume should be subtle enough that others would love to stay around you and on the other hand shouldn’t be too strong to make others cringe with constant sneezes! While choosing a suitable perfume, it’s a good idea to try spraying sample perfumes directly onto your skin to know if its suits your skin or not. Its suggested not to try more than three fragrances at one time coz your nose will lose its ability to tell the difference.

After you are satisfied that the perfume’s fragrance, don’t hurry up to buy it. Try on a sample of that particular perfume and leave it on for a day. You will be able to know if the perfume suits your body, or any other possible allergies or headache, and even if the scent is losing or not from this simple exercise.

Now some do’s and don’t about perfume use:

Don’t keep an already opened perfume for long. Once opened it should be used else the fragrance will fade. Also direct exposure to sunlight or extreme temp can change the scent of your perfume, hence should always be kept in a cool, dry place away from direct light.

Too much overdoing of perfume application won’t make you smell any better! Hence stop spraying extra perfume over your garments, neck, and even hair. Also it’s not a good idea to put fragrance directly on furs or fabrics as it might stain. You want to please yourself and those who are closest to you with your fragrance. Anything beyond that is considered as overdoing.

The perfect time to apply perfume is right after a shower as the pores of our body is open then and it soaks up the scent of the perfume. Those who have dry skin should apply more perfume.

It’s a good idea to change perfume according to the season. Stronger perfumes are required for winter as the perfume scent gets reduced with the dip in temperature. You can dab your perfume in usual places such as on the wrist, the inside of the elbow, neck or even the back of the knees. But restrain from applying it behind the ears as it might blend with the skin secretions and create a bad smell.
